Crank, cam, rods, heads, block all need a professional to inspect. Rebuilding old Cummins engines is an expensive undertaking. I think you need to find someone close who can advise you before you get in too deep. Used engines are cheap, but vary in condition. I would take the heads to a machine shop and have the valve and guides done if required. I would also strongly recommend a head bolt tap, to clear the bolt holes in the block. What determines if this is a viable route is the condition of the block. What is more economical? Any good recommendations on shops to re-build or replace? One common place is from the rear of the cam, on the small cams it is open to the bellhousing and sealed with a cork gasket, if that goes it will leak between the block and bell, and can either leak outside down the block, or inside and out the bottom of the bell.Īlmost impossible to advise without knowing the condition of the engine and what tools and skill you have. The motor uses lots of oil and definitely needs some serious work inside.
